A retail truck is designed to open up, and that is exactly the problem. To turn a closed body into a shop you cut a large display opening in one side, often add a gullwing panel above it, hinge a deck off the lower edge and fit a rear door people can walk through. What is left of the original body side is a set of narrow piers between big holes.

Every failure we see on these units traces back to that. A door that jams, a deck that has cracked the skin at its hinge, a header that has dropped enough to stop a gas strut holding a panel up. The hardware gets blamed and the hardware is rarely at fault. The opening around it has moved.

## A retail body is defined by its openings

Turning a delivery body into a shop means removing a great deal of one side. A display aperture goes in at counter height, a gullwing panel often goes above it, a deck hinges off the lower edge, and a rear entrance gets widened so customers can step through. What remains of that body side are narrow piers of panel between large holes.

Those piers now carry everything the removed panel used to carry, plus the hardware loads that came with the conversion. When a builder puts proper headers, jambs and a reinforced sill back in, these trucks last very well. When the openings were cut and trimmed rather than framed, the hardware starts reporting problems five years later.

## The display door and a body that twists on a market pitch

Roll up curtains are unforgiving about track parallelism, and a retail body gives them less help than a delivery body does. Below the display door there is another large opening and a hinge line, so the lower rail is fixed to less structure than the hardware maker assumed when the door was specified. On level ground, with the body sitting square, everything works exactly as it should and the curtain runs sweetly all day.

Park across a camber at a market and the body takes a small twist. The tracks lose parallel by a couple of millimetres, and the curtain binds at whatever height the gap closes. Operators describe it as intermittent, which it is, and that intermittency is the diagnosis. We check the tracks with the unit level and again with one wheel on a block.

## Gullwing panels, gas struts and a header doing two jobs

A gullwing panel is hinged along the top and held open by two gas struts pushing against the header above the display opening. That header is usually the same extrusion or tube the builder used over an ordinary entry door, and it is now carrying a wide panel plus strut thrust every single time the truck opens for trade.

As the header sags, the strut mounting geometry changes. The strut loses leverage, the panel begins to drift closed, and staff prop it with something. New struts feel like the answer for a month. We measure the header for straightness under load, reinforce it, and re-establish the strut geometry to the panel maker's figures before fitting anything new.

> **warning:** A gullwing panel that needs a prop is a header problem, not a strut problem. Fitting stronger struts to a sagging header accelerates the sag.

## The fold down deck and its hinge line

A deck that folds out of the lower edge of the display aperture is one of the best features on these trucks and one of the hardest details to get right. Deployed, it carries its own weight plus whoever is standing on it, and all of that arrives at a hinge line fastened along the bottom of the biggest hole in the body.

With not much section left to spread the load, cracks propagate upward from the hinge fastener line into the skin. They start short and they always grow. We let in new material, back the hinge line with a continuous plate tied into the sill, and where the original fastener spacing was too coarse we increase it before the deck goes back on.

## Display shelving anchored through a decorative lining

Retail interiors are finished before the shelving goes in, which means the shelving gets fastened through a decorative lining into whatever is behind it. Sometimes that is a post. Often it is skin. Stock then loads those fasteners on every mile between pitches, and it is the lining that tears first, so the visible symptom is a shelf drooping rather than a wall failing.

We take the lining off across the affected run, fit a continuous rail into the posts behind it, and remount the shelving to that rail so merchandise load reaches structure instead of sheet. The lining goes back on afterward, which is the order that keeps a finished interior looking finished rather than looking repaired. Where the lining itself has torn, that section is replaced rather than filled, because a filled tear telegraphs under display lighting.

## Graphics, blends and where the boundary goes

On a retail truck the artwork is the business. Customers recognize the vehicle across a market before they read anything written on it, so a repair that leaves a visible boundary through a printed design has failed even when the bodywork underneath is faultless. That makes the blend boundary a design decision rather than a technical convenience, and it is a decision we make with the operator rather than for them.

We photograph the artwork from three distances before disassembly, template the elements crossing the repair area, and choose a boundary at a natural break in the design rather than at the edge of the damage. Color gets read with a spectrophotometer at several points, because a printed panel that has faced south for six seasons is not the color the file says it is.
