# Pet Grooming Van Floor, Tub and Tank Repair

## What breaks on a mobile pet grooming van?

A grooming rig does something no other vehicle in this family does. It runs warm water through a stainless tub for six to eight hours a day, drains it through a hole cut in the floor, and does that four or five days a week for years. Add shampoo, conditioner and de-shedding solution, all of which contain surfactants designed to lift grease off hair, and you have a chemical wash running over structural sheet metal.

That is the whole story of these vans. The build quality above the floor is often excellent. Below it, a Sprinter floor pan is under a millimetre of galvanized steel, and galvanizing is not a chemical coating. Once the surfactants have taken it off around the drain, the clock starts.

## How a wet room sits inside a van shell

Wag'n Tails, Gryphon and the better independent builders all solve the same problem the same way: a stainless tub against one wall, a table opposite it, tanks low and forward for weight, and a fully coved interior so the whole space can be hosed out. Above the floor that is good work, and it is why these conversions last as long as they do.

The compromise is underneath. A Sprinter or Transit floor pan is structural sheet metal under a millimetre thick, protected by galvanizing rather than by paint. Cutting a drain through it, bolting tank straps to it and then running warm soapy water across it for years is a combination the platform was never asked about, and the van has no way to tell you it is losing. There is no noise, no smell and nothing visible from inside until the covering starts to move underfoot.

## The tub drain is the corrosion clock

Shampoos and de-shedding solutions work by lifting grease off hair, and they do not distinguish between grease and a zinc coating. Every wash cycle leaves a film of surfactant around the drain flange, and the cut edge of the drain hole is bare steel from the day it was made. Warm, wet and chemically stripped is the exact condition steel needs.

So the corrosion does not start where you can see it. It starts at the cut edge, spreads outward under the flooring, and by the time a groomer notices a soft spot beside the tub the pan has been thinning for years. We lift the flooring back a foot in every direction from the drain, because the visible hole is never the extent of it.

## Tank straps pull through, they do not pull out

A full sixty gallon fresh tank is about five hundred pounds of water that shifts on every corner and every driveway apron. Most builds hold it with two or three straps fastened into the floor pan, and in thin sheet the failure mode is a crescent tear around the fastener rather than a fastener backing out. The tank then moves a quarter inch each way, which slowly works every plumbing joint attached to it.

The fix is not a bigger bolt. We fabricate a spreader plate or a welded angle that carries the strap load into a cross member, then reset the strap tension to the tank maker's figure. While the tank is out we look at the grey tank mounts too, because the same builder usually used the same detail on both.

## The water heater vent and the wall behind the tub

A six gallon or tankless heater vents low through a body side, and on most layouts that is within a couple of feet of the wettest surface in the vehicle. The flange sits in a panel that gets sprayed from inside every day and pressure washed from outside every week, with one bead of sealant between those two jobs.

When the bead goes the water does not run out. It tracks down inside the wall cavity and arrives at the floor exactly where the tub wall meets the pan, which is already the most compromised part of the vehicle. We water test the flange from outside with the interior panel down, so we can see where the water actually goes rather than where the stain appeared.

## Rear doors, ramps and a dropped hinge line

A ramp for a large dog is five or six feet of aluminum weighing forty pounds, and on most conversions it stows on brackets bolted to the rear doors. Those doors were hinged for a door. Adding the ramp weight and then dropping it into position twice per appointment wears the lower hinge pin, and the door starts sitting low.

The symptom is a striker that no longer catches on the first push, so groomers slam the door harder, which accelerates all of it. We replace the hinge components, re-shim the door to the aperture and relocate the ramp brackets onto the body rather than the door wherever the layout allows. Where it does not allow that, the door skin gets a backing plate behind the bracket so the load spreads across the inner panel instead of pulling on four spot welded fasteners.

## The vent above the table, and why it cracks

The vent over the grooming table runs all day to clear hair and moisture, which is far more duty than a residential roof vent was designed for. Hair builds on the fan blades, the fan runs progressively out of balance, and the plastic flange it sits in cracks radially from the screw holes. Roof panels on a van flex, so the cracks propagate.

It then leaks directly onto the table, which is the last place a groomer wants water. We fit the vent with a metal backing frame that spreads the fastener load, reseal the flange onto sound panel, and where the roof itself has dimpled around the old fasteners that dimpling gets worked flat before anything new goes on. A vent bolted down onto a dimpled panel simply leaks again from a slightly different place.

## Where a grooming rig is repaired and what it costs

None of this is a mobile repair job and there is no roadside version of it. Cutting and welding a floor pan needs the van on a lift with the tub out, and refinishing a body side needs the booth, so every grooming rig is worked in shop at Yorba Linda. ### The floor beside my grooming tub feels soft. How bad is that?

Worse than it feels. The corrosion starts at the cut edge of the drain hole and spreads outward under the flooring, so the soft spot is the far edge of the damage rather than the middle. ### Can shampoo really corrode a van floor pan?

### Why does the roof vent over my grooming table drip?

Hair loads the fan, the fan runs out of balance, and the plastic flange cracks radially from its screw holes while the roof panel flexes underneath. We fit a metal backing frame to spread the fastener load, work any dimpling in the panel flat, and reseal onto sound material rather than over the old bead.

### How do you support a grooming trailer while you work on it?

On stands under the frame rails, never under the axle or the leaf springs. A grooming trailer carries most of its weight in tanks and a tub, so the load path runs through the frame. Supporting it at the axle puts a bending load into the spring hangers, which is a repair nobody needs to invent.
