A service body truck is the most used and least respected vehicle in a fleet. Compartment doors open and shut fifty times a day, tools land on the bed floor from waist height, the body carries several hundred pounds of parts that never come out, and the whole assembly is bolted to a frame that twists every time the truck leaves a job site.

That gives these units a repair profile that has almost nothing to do with collisions. The complaint we hear is a door that will not shut or a body that has started creaking. What we find under the truck is a set of mounting holes that have grown oval and a bracket that is working rather than holding.

## Compartment doors and the arithmetic of daily use

Take three doors on a service body opened twenty times each per working day. That is twelve hundred cycles a month on hinges the size of a house door's, on doors that get leaned on to reach the back of a shelf. Hinge pins wear, the door drops, and the latch stops meeting its striker cleanly.

Where the body uses a master locking rod, one worn door defeats the whole row, which is why a crew reporting a single sticking door often needs every hinge on that side. We measure door drop at each hinge and rebuild rather than adjusting strikers, because a striker moved to catch a sagging door is a repair with a short life.

## The mounting holes are the story

A service body is stiff. A truck frame flexes by design. The mounting hardware between them is asked to hold that contradiction together while the truck crosses a rutted site with eight hundred pounds of parts in the compartments. When clamp is lost, movement starts, and movement makes the hole oval.

An oval hole cannot be clamped again. We repair or replace the bracket, restore hole size properly, and refit with correct hardware and spacers to the body manufacturer's pattern. The field fix of a bigger bolt is the thing we most often have to undo, and it is the reason a creak becomes a cracked frame flange two years later.

## Crane loads and the torsion box

A telescopic crane lifting off the side of a truck converts that load into a twisting moment. The pedestal itself is heavily built and rarely the problem. What resists the moment is the torsion box the pedestal sits in and its connection to the frame rails, and that is where cracks appear, usually at a weld toe on the box to rail joint.

For any repair inside that structure the crane comes off. It goes back on to specified torque with the geometry checked, and we schedule the crane service company to perform its inspection afterwards. We do not inspect, load test or certify cranes, and a body shop claiming otherwise should be treated with suspicion.

> **warning:** If a crane equipped truck has a crack anywhere near the torsion box, take it out of lifting service until it has been opened up. That structure is what stops a load from twisting the body off the frame.

## Bed floors and the seam behind the rear wheel

Hardwood bed floors absorb water and hold it against the steel understructure, which corrodes quietly from a face nobody sees. Steel floors avoid that and instead collect standing water at the joints. Either way the first symptom is usually a soft spot underfoot or a rust stain running down the outside of a rear compartment.

The other hidden location is the vertical seam behind the rear wheel, which takes tire spray directly and holds it in the lap. We open both areas on any truck in for body work, because finding them during a scheduled repair costs a fraction of finding them when a compartment floor drops through.

## Racks, bumpers and the things crews stand on

Ladder and pipe racks lever long heavy loads against their mounts every time the truck crosses a dip, and rear bumpers on service trucks are used as steps, tow points and occasional impact absorbers. Both bolt into sections that were not designed as heavy structure, so the mount cracks before the rack or bumper does.

We rebuild those mounts with reinforcement that spreads load rather than replacing like for like, which is one of the few places on these trucks where an improvement over the original design is straightforwardly the right answer. Where a crew has added a rack the body manufacturer never fitted, we say what the body can carry.

## Refinishing a work truck honestly

Service bodies are painted to a commercial standard, usually white, and they collect scrapes for a living. Refinishing one panel of a ten year old white body produces a visible difference, because white oxidises and yellows unevenly depending on which side faced the sun in the yard.

So we set expectations before the gun comes out. On a repaired compartment we blend to a natural edge and tell an owner honestly what the result will look like next to the adjacent panel. Where a fleet wants uniformity across a body, painting the whole side is cheaper than doing two panels twice and being unhappy with both.

## Turnaround and keeping a crew working

A service truck out of action is a crew standing around, which is the real cost in this segment and it is never on an invoice. Door and hinge work is one to three shop days. Mount renewal is three to six. Torsion box repair with crane removal and reinstallation is one to three weeks, plus whatever the crane inspection visit needs.

## Questions and answers

### One compartment door will not lock and now none of them will. Why?

Master locking rods fail at the weakest door in the row. A worn top hinge lets that door drop a few millimeters, its latch no longer meets the striker cleanly, and the rod cannot complete its travel. We measure door drop at each hinge and rebuild the hinges rather than moving strikers to compensate.

### Our service body creaks over bumps. Is that something to fix?

Yes, and sooner is much cheaper. The creak means body mount clamp has been lost and the mounting holes are working, which makes them oval. An oval hole cannot be re clamped, so the repair is bracket work and hole restoration. Left alone it eventually cracks the frame flange, which costs several times more.

### There is a crack near the crane pedestal. Can you weld it and send us out?

Not without opening the torsion box. Crane loads arrive as a twisting moment resisted by that box and its welds to the frame rails, so a visible crack is usually the end of something larger. The crane comes off, we repair and reinforce, then the crane service company performs its inspection before the unit lifts again.

### Do you inspect or load test the crane afterwards?

No. We repair the structure it mounts into, reinstall to specified torque and verify geometry. Crane inspection, load testing and certification belong to the crane service company, and we schedule their visit into the job so a truck is not waiting on a certification nobody arranged.

### The wood bed floor has a soft spot. Is the steel under it gone?

Often partly. Hardwood absorbs water and holds it against the steel understructure, so the wood is the symptom and the frame under it is the question. We lift the floor and assess the steel, repair or replace what has lost section, then refit a floor. Replacing wood over corroded steel just hides it.

### Will a repaired white compartment match the rest of the body?

Close, with an honest caveat. White oxidises and yellows unevenly depending on which side faced the sun in the yard, so a single repaired panel on a ten year old body can read slightly different. We blend to a natural edge and tell you what to expect. Painting a full side is often the better value.
