Fixed route service is the hardest duty cycle in this building. ## Cage or cover: the question that sets the estimate

On a Gillig Low Floor or a New Flyer Xcelsior, load runs through a welded tube cage. The composite skirt panels below the window line are covers. They bolt on, they carry no structural duty, and a large amount of visible curb damage is genuinely a fastener and panel job rather than a body job. That is the good news on these coaches.

The bad news is that the same construction hides real damage well. A skirt panel absorbs a low speed hit and springs back looking tired rather than broken, while the tube behind it has taken a set. We pull panels on any corner with contact history and measure the cage rather than trusting an outside photo, because a bent tube found in week one is a fraction of the same tube found after a livery has been repainted.

## Kneeling suspension is why curb hits matter here

Every stop on a low floor route ends with the front corner dropping on air to shorten the step. Bent linkages and damaged height control valves both show the same symptom: a coach that no longer returns to the same place twice.

We start by airing the coach to the manufacturer ride height and measuring all four corners against the specification before touching a panel. A coach sitting an inch low on the front left will present exactly like a sagging cage, and correcting the panel instead of the height is how a repair gets done twice.
