Countertops in a house sit still. Countertops in a coach travel at freeway speed over expansion joints, get twisted slightly every time the chassis flexes, and heat up under a skylight until they are too hot to lean on. Material that behaves impeccably in a kitchen can fail quickly in a galley, and it almost always fails in the same place: the inside corner of the sink cutout.

Most of the countertop work that comes through here is either a repair to a factory laminate top that has swollen at the sink rim, or a replacement where somebody put stone in without the substrate to carry it. Both are fixable. Both are also avoidable, and the difference between a top that lasts and one that cracks on the first long trip is decided during fabrication rather than during installation.

## Three materials and how each behaves in a moving vehicle

High pressure laminate over a wood core is what most coaches leave the factory with. It is light, it is inexpensive, and it fails at water rather than at flex. Once the core takes water at a sink rim it swells permanently, and there is no repair that returns it to dimension. Sealing every cut edge during fabrication is what prevents that, and it is routinely skipped in volume production.

Solid surface is the material best suited to a vehicle. It is homogeneous through its thickness, so scratches and burns sand out, seams can be bonded invisibly and repaired later, and it tolerates a little movement. Engineered quartz looks superb and is the heaviest option by a wide margin, which makes it a design decision as much as a material one.

## Why the sink corner is where everything cracks

A cutout removes material from the middle of a panel that is carrying load across a span. At every inside corner of that cutout, stress concentrates, and a sharp corner concentrates it into essentially a single point. Add the twisting a chassis imposes on a galley run every time one wheel crosses something the others do not, and that point is where a crack begins.

The fix is geometry. A radiused inside corner spreads the same stress around a curve instead of into a point, and it costs nothing at the fabrication stage. We radius every cutout on every material, including laminate where the benefit is smaller but the sealed edge matters. It is the least glamorous detail on this page and it prevents more failures than anything else we do.

## Substrate underneath and how the top is bedded

In a house, a countertop spans between cabinet boxes and that is fine because nothing moves. In a coach, an unsupported span becomes a diving board with a heavy plate on it, and around a sink cutout the remaining material is often quite narrow. Continuous plywood substrate across the whole run turns that span back into a supported surface.

Bedding matters as much as substrate. A top bonded rigidly to the cabinetry along its full perimeter has nowhere to move, so every bit of chassis flex goes straight into the material. Flexible bedding compound lets the assembly absorb a small amount of movement without transferring it. That combination, continuous support plus flexible attachment, is what allows stone to work in a vehicle at all.

## Weight against cargo capacity in the galley

A galley run in engineered quartz weighs roughly three times what the same run weighs in solid surface. On a coach with generous capacity that is a non issue. On a lightly rated trailer or a coach already carrying solar, lithium and a full water tank, it can consume a real share of what is left, and cargo capacity is a legal figure rather than a suggestion.

We work the number before the material is ordered. Sometimes the answer is that quartz is fine. Sometimes it is that a reduced thickness slab works. Sometimes it is that solid surface delivers most of the appearance at a third of the pounds, and the owner is glad to have had the conversation before rather than after.

## When a countertop can be repaired instead of replaced

Solid surface is the material that rewards repair. Scratches, dull patches and light burns sand out completely because the colour goes through the whole thickness. Open seams rebond with colour matched adhesive. Even a cracked corner can sometimes be repaired and reinforced from underneath, provided the reason for the crack gets corrected at the same time.

Laminate is more limited. Edge banding can be reattached, a scorch can sometimes be disguised, but swelling at a water damaged core is terminal for that section. Quartz sits in between: chips fill convincingly, cracks generally do not. We tell owners honestly which of these categories their top is in rather than quoting a replacement by default.

## Backsplashes, edge profiles and where water actually gets in

The junction where a countertop meets a wall is the second most common failure point after the sink corner, and for the same underlying reason: it is a joint between two things that move relative to each other. A rigid backsplash bonded hard to both the top and the wall has nowhere to absorb that movement, so it either cracks or it opens a gap that then collects water.

Coved backsplashes made from the same solid surface material solve it neatly by making the transition part of the top itself. Where an applied backsplash is used instead, it gets bedded flexibly and sealed with a product that stays elastic rather than one that cures hard. On laminate tops we pay particular attention here, because the cut edge at the back of the panel is the most likely place for water to reach the core.

Edge profiles matter for the same reason. A simple eased edge on solid surface is repairable forever. A postformed laminate edge is attractive and cannot be repaired once the core swells behind it, which is worth knowing before choosing between them on a galley that will see daily use.

## Sinks, cooktops and getting the cutouts right

Cutout geometry has to match the fixture, and RV fixtures are not residential fixtures. A Dometic or Furrion drop in cooktop has its own opening dimensions and its own clearance requirements to combustible surfaces. A covered sink with a hinged lid needs its rim seated properly or the cover will not close flush against the surround.

We set fixtures with fresh seals and finish the joint so water cannot stand against a cut edge, which on laminate is the difference between a top that lasts and one that swells in three years. Where a fixture is being changed at the same time, we confirm the new opening before cutting rather than adapting afterwards with trim.

## Questions and answers

### Can I put quartz countertops in my motorhome?

Yes, with three conditions: continuous plywood substrate under the whole run, radiused inside corners at every cutout, and flexible bedding rather than rigid bonding. The other question is weight, since quartz runs roughly three times the weight of solid surface across the same galley footprint.

### Why did my countertop crack at the corner of the sink?

Because the corner was cut square. A sharp inside corner concentrates stress into a point, and a coach twists that panel every time a wheel crosses something the others do not. Radiusing the corner spreads the same stress around a curve and it costs nothing during fabrication.

### The laminate around my sink has swollen. Can it be repaired?

Not returned to dimension. Water has entered the wood core through an unsealed cut edge and swelling is irreversible. Resealing the rim over a swollen substrate leaves a permanent ridge. The affected section or the whole top gets replaced, with every cut edge sealed this time.

### Can scratches be removed from a solid surface countertop?

Yes, and repeatedly. Solid surface is homogeneous through its thickness, so sanding and refinishing to the original sheen removes scratches, dull patches and light burns entirely. This repairability is the main reason we recommend it over stone for coaches that get used hard.

### Can you fabricate the top from measurements I send you?

We would rather template off the coach. Cabinet runs in an RV drift out of square over years of road use, so a top fabricated from nominal dimensions usually needs scribing on site and the result shows at the wall. Templating from the installed boxes takes an hour or two and avoids that.

### My dinette table has delaminated around the pedestal. Is that the same repair?

Similar approach, smaller scale. The fitting has worked in the core and let water or stress into the panel. We replace or rebuild the top, add proper backing at the pedestal fitting, and seal the through hole so the same movement does not open it up again.
