# Chassis Alignment Repair for Motorhomes, Trailers and Trucks

## What is chassis alignment repair?

Chassis alignment repair corrects where the axles, springs, body mounts and outriggers sit relative to the frame centerline, rather than adjusting the steering angles alone. A vehicle can have perfectly straight frame rails and still refuse to go down the road properly. What decides that is where everything is attached: whether the axles sit square to centerline, whether the springs hang where they were meant to hang, and whether the body still sits on its mounts the way it left the factory. That is a structural question, not a wheel alignment question.

Owners usually arrive after somebody else has already set the toe. The tires are still scrubbing, the trailer still follows a foot off to one side, and nobody can explain it. The explanation is nearly always that an alignment rack adjusts the angles it can reach, and the thing that is actually out of position is a mounting point that no adjustment reaches.

## Symptoms of a chassis that is out of position

The classic one is dog tracking, where the trailer or the rear of a motorhome follows a line offset from the front. Owners notice it in a shop window reflection or from a photograph somebody took on the road. It is easy to dismiss because the vehicle still drives, but it means the rear axle centerline is not perpendicular to the frame centerline, and every mile in that condition is scrubbing rubber sideways.

The second family of symptoms is thermal. On a tandem axle setup, one tire running noticeably hotter than the others after an hour on the freeway is carrying more than its share, which comes from a skewed axle or a spring pack that has lost height. The third family involves the body: bay doors binding on one side, a clunk over expansion joints, or a rear corner sitting visibly low.

## Why this is not the same as a wheel alignment

A wheel alignment adjusts angles that have adjusters: toe, and on some front ends caster and camber. It works from the assumption that everything the suspension is bolted to is where the manufacturer put it. That assumption is exactly what fails on a vehicle that has taken a curb strike, carried an overload for years, or had a repair done on one side.

Chassis alignment starts a level below. We are checking whether the axle is square to the frame, whether the spring hangers are in their original positions, whether ride height matches side to side, and whether the body is sitting correctly on its mounts. When those are right, a conventional alignment will hold. When they are wrong, no adjustment will make the vehicle track and the tires will keep telling you so.

> **note:** If your tire wear returns within a few thousand miles of a fresh alignment, the alignment is not the problem. Something the alignment cannot reach is out of position.

## Trailer and fifth wheel axle position

Trailer axles have no adjustment. A Dexter or AL-KO axle sits in spring seats that are welded to the tube, and the springs hang from hangers welded to the frame. Squareness is therefore built in at manufacture and lost through impact, through U bolt torque loss, or through a hanger cracking at its weld. Correcting it means measuring and physically moving something, not turning an adjuster.

The measurement runs from a common reference at the coupler or pin, back to each end of each axle. Both axles on a tandem are squared to that front reference rather than to one another, which is the single most common mistake in this work. Square a rear axle to a front axle that is itself skewed and you have produced a trailer that tracks straight down its own crooked line.

## Body mounts, outriggers and the way the coach sits on the frame

A motorhome body is not welded to its chassis. It sits on mounts with bushings and shims, and those components have a service life. When bushings perish or a mount shears, the body settles unevenly and begins to move independently of the rails underneath it. The first complaint is usually a clunk over expansion joints, and the second is a bay door that will not latch on one side.

Outriggers are the other structural component owners never hear about until they fail. They carry the body out past the rails, particularly on long rear overhangs, and they fatigue crack at the weld to the rail long before the rail itself shows anything. On coaches with a heavy rear overhang and a lot of miles, we find cracked outriggers routinely, and repairing them means fabricating and welding rather than bolting a part on.

## How we establish thrust angle and squareness

Ride height is read first at matched stations on both sides, with the unit loaded the way it actually travels rather than empty. That order matters more than it sounds. A height difference distorts every subsequent reading, and correcting to an unloaded measurement produces a vehicle that measures right on the shop floor and behaves wrong the moment it is packed for a trip.

Axle position then gets measured to a common front reference. On heavy chassis we use laser equipment of the Josam and Bee Line type. On trailers a tram measurement from the coupler is both faster and entirely adequate. Thrust angle falls directly out of those readings, since thrust is a description of where the rear axle points relative to the frame rather than a setting anyone dials in.

## Chassis work after a curb strike or a road hazard

Curb strikes are the most underestimated event in this category. A hard hit against a curb at low speed transmits a large lateral load straight into a spring seat and can move an axle without bending a single visible part. The vehicle drives away, the owner assumes nothing happened, and the tires start telling a different story two months later.

Debris strikes on SR-241 produce a related pattern on trailers, where an impact to a wheel or tire loads the axle tube in bending. That can leave a very slight bow that never shows on a walk around and is obvious the moment somebody puts a tram on it. If a unit has taken any impact below the floor line, measurement is cheaper than a set of tires.

## What it costs, and what we handle here

Ten to fifty five hours at $210 per hour gives a range of $2,000 to $12,000+. Simple work sits low: measure a tandem trailer, find one axle out, reposition it and replace U bolts. Complex work climbs fast, because relocating a spring hanger means cutting a welded assembly off a frame, positioning the new one from a reference rather than from the old holes, and reinforcing to specification.

Measurement, fabrication, hanger relocation, body mount work and outrigger repair all happen in our structural bay. Steering boxes, air suspension parts and the final steering angle setting go to the chassis maker network on our schedule. One thing we check before quoting is the frame itself: if a rail is in diamond or twist, correcting axle position on top of it is wasted work.

## Questions and answers

### What actually causes a trailer to dog track?

An axle that is not perpendicular to the frame centerline. Common causes are U bolt torque loss letting the axle walk in its seats, a curb strike moving a spring seat, or a cracked hanger. None of those are adjustable, so correcting it means measuring from the coupler and physically repositioning something.

### Should the rear axle be squared to the front axle on a tandem?

No. Both axles are measured back to a common reference at the coupler or pin. Squaring the rear to the front makes two axles agree with each other while both remain wrong relative to the trailer, which produces a unit that tracks consistently along a crooked line.

### Does the coach need to be loaded when you measure it?

Loaded the way it normally travels, yes. Ride height changes significantly between an empty and a loaded unit, and every squareness and thrust reading depends on height being correct. Correcting to an empty measurement produces a vehicle that is right on the shop floor and wrong on the freeway.

### What is an outrigger and why does it crack?

An outrigger extends the body support outboard of the frame rails, most importantly under a long rear overhang. It sees more bending than the rail does and fatigue cracks at the weld to the rail. On high mileage coaches with heavy overhangs we find these routinely, and repair means fabricating and welding a new member.

### Why does my motorhome clunk over expansion joints?

Usually a failed body mount. The coach sits on bushings and shims rather than being welded to the chassis, and when a bushing perishes or a mount shears the body moves independently of the rails. Bay doors binding on one side is the companion symptom that confirms it.

### I hit a curb hard but nothing looks bent. Should I have it checked?

Yes. A lateral load into a spring seat can move an axle without deforming anything visible, and the evidence arrives later as scrubbed tires and a unit that wanders. A measurement session costs far less than the tire set you will otherwise replace, and it either finds the problem or rules it out.
