This is the department for damage that marked the vehicle without changing it. A dent, a torn skin, a bumper pushed in, a wheel arch chewed up by a shredded tire. The vehicle still measures correct, everything still latches, and the repair is about surfaces and their mounts rather than about geometry.

The four paths below separate on material and on what the damaged part was bolted to. Read the second column of the table before the first, because the same visible dent on an aluminum trailer skin and on a Sprinter quarter are completely different repairs with a fourfold price difference between them.

## The material decides the method, and owners rarely know the material

Four different constructions arrive here looking like the same dent. Painted steel on a Sprinter or box truck can be pulled, worked and finished, and it holds shape once corrected. Aluminum sheet on a trailer stretches when you work it and never returns to a flat plane, so it gets replaced at a seam instead. Bonded fiberglass over foam or lauan cannot be pulled at all, because tension separates the layers and you leave with a bigger repair than you arrived with. And molded composite cracks rather than dents.

This is why the first thing a technician does here is identify the material rather than measure the damage. It also explains the price spread on this page. Two dents of identical size, one in a van panel and one in an aluminum trailer side, differ by a factor of five because one is worked and the other is a new sheet, new rivets, new trim and a repaint of the surrounding area.

## Damage the metal will still take back

Where the film is unbroken and the substrate is sound, the fastest path is to work the metal rather than replace it. That means reading the dent before touching it: finding the high spots created around the low one, working from the outside of the damage inward, and using the least filler that will make the panel read flat under a long board. Paintless techniques have a place on van and truck steel and no place at all on an RV sidewall, where there is nothing behind the skin to push against.

## When the panel has to come off

Once a skin is split, creased across a seam or hollow over a broad area, working it is no longer honest. The panel comes off to the nearest structural seam, whatever is behind it gets inspected and replaced where wet or crushed, and new material goes on bonded, riveted or Huck bolted depending on how the unit was built. Sourcing is the hard part: coloured gelcoat skin and discontinued box body profiles routinely run weeks, and on some older units the profile has to be cut and formed here.

## Bumpers, receivers and the things bolted through them

On a coach the rear bumper is frequently carrying a hitch receiver, a ladder, a spare carrier and sometimes the sewer hose stored inside it. So a bumper that took a hit is never only a bumper question. The tube may straighten, but the mounts it bolts to and the frame horns behind them need inspecting before anyone quotes, and a steel tube bumper that has stored a wet hose for eight years is often rusted from the inside out regardless of the impact.

## Wheel openings, skirts and quarter panels

A shredded rear dual does more damage than owners expect and it does it in two ways at once. The tread flails upward and tears the skirt and wheel opening, and the heat from a running flat cooks the adjacent panel and any sealant near it. So the repair boundary extends well past the visible tear. On vans the equivalent damage is a creased quarter, which is sectioned only where the manufacturer designates a cut line, because a quarter is part of what holds the shell in shape.

## The undamaged side is the only dimension sheet we have

Automotive repair has published dimensions for every panel gap and contour on a given platform. RV bodywork does not. Manufacturers build to a tolerance that varies between units off the same line, and after a decade of flex nothing on a towable is exactly where it started. So the reference for a body repair here is the opposite side of the same vehicle, measured at the same points.

That sounds obvious and it changes how we work. Contours get templated off the good side before the damaged side is touched. Trim lines get measured from a fixed datum on both sides. And the final check is done outside in daylight, standing back far enough to see both sides in sequence, because a repair that looks correct from three feet can be visibly proud from thirty.

## How fleet body work gets scheduled differently

A private owner brings us one incident. A delivery operator brings us four months of accumulated contact on six vehicles and needs three of them back by Thursday. Those are different problems and we schedule them differently. Fleet units get staged in rotation so no more than an agreed number are down at once, and the work order separates each incident on its own line.

That separation is not bookkeeping. If a claim is ever filed on any of it, a carrier has to be able to tell a loading dock rub in March from a mirror strike in June. We are listening for where the skin is still bonded to what is behind it. A bright tap means solid, a dull one means a void. On bonded RV construction the void extends well past the visible dent, and filling over it produces a repair that cracks or shadows within a season.
