Awnings are the part of an RV that fails in one night. A powered awning adds a drive tube motor, limit settings, a wall switch and usually a wind sensor, and every one of those introduces its own failure. A motor that blows a fuse a second after starting is fighting something mechanical. An awning that stops a foot short every time has lost its taught limit. Over retraction that crushes fabric into the rail is a limit problem too, and it destroys a canopy quietly over a few dozen cycles. Wind sensors are worth having and worth verifying, because a sensor with no power does nothing at all and the owner does not find out until the night it mattered.

## When the whole assembly comes off

Some awnings are past component repair, and the tell is usually the rail rather than the fabric. Screw holes worn into slots, a rail lifting along part of its length, staining on the interior wall directly below it, or an assembly old enough that nobody supplies arm sets for it any more. Replacing the lot is also the moment to correct the original mounting, which on a great many units was a fastener field driven straight into thin skin with no framing or plate behind it. ## The rail, and the wall nobody looks at

An awning rail is a long aluminium extrusion carrying a cantilevered sail load into a wall that is often eight millimetres of laminate. Fasteners into that laminate alone will hold for a few years and then start working.
