A working van is two vehicles at once: a body that has to be straight and an interior that has to hold tooling still at freeway speed. This one was struck from behind at a signal, hard enough to buckle the floor but not hard enough to look dramatic. The owner's first concern was the doors. The finding that mattered was inside.

This file follows a repair where the collision damage was ordinary and the upfit finding was not, and where the owner made a deliberate decision to change something while the van was already open.

## Measuring the floor before touching the doors

The temptation on a rear impact is to start with the doors, because the doors are what the owner sees. We measured the floor plane first, from a reference at the front of the load area to points across the rear, and compared side to side. The floor had lifted about three eighths of an inch on the driver side ahead of the rear crossmember, which is a small number that puts a large twist into a door opening.

Correcting the floor first meant the door frame then needed considerably less work, and it meant the doors would still shut in six months. Rehanging doors onto an opening that is still distorted produces a van that latches on delivery day and starts rattling once the body flexes on a driveway apron. Sequence is most of the craft in this kind of repair.

## What pulled the shelving off the wall

The driver side shelving run had torn away at four mounting points and was leaning into the load area. On inspection, the track fasteners had not sheared. They had pulled through the wall panel, taking crescent shaped tears of thin material with them. The track had been mounted to the panel rather than to the vertical structural ribs behind it, so in a rear impact the entire mass of the shelving and its contents was being restrained by sheet metal a fraction of a millimetre thick.

That is a common upfit shortcut and it is worth being blunt about. Under normal driving the panel holds it fine, which is why it survives for years and looks like a correct installation. Under a decelerating load it does not, and a shelf full of tooling leaving the wall inside a van is a serious event regardless of how minor the collision was.

## How the shelving went back

New track, landed on the vertical ribs where they existed, and load spreading backing plates behind the panel where a rib was not available in the right place. The torn panel areas were repaired first, since fastening into a repaired tear without backing simply relocates the failure. Fasteners were sized for the track and torqued rather than run in with an impact driver.

It is not glamorous work and it took eleven of the fourteen fabrication hours. It is also the part of this job that will matter if the van is ever struck again. An upfit is safety equipment in a working vehicle, and treating it as furniture is how people get hurt in collisions that should have been survivable without incident.

## The change the owner chose to make

With the driver side wall open, the owner asked about moving a drawer unit forward and adding a shorter shelf run behind the wheel arch, which they had wanted for two years. That is a legitimate thing to do while the wall is already apart, and it cost a fraction of what it would cost as its own visit. It also had nothing to do with the collision.

So it went on the invoice as a separate line under a separate authorization, clearly labelled as owner elected. That separation matters even on a self funded job, because it keeps the repair record clean if the van is ever appraised, sold or involved in another claim. Mixing elected upgrades into a collision repair line is how records become useless.

## Delivery, downtime and what it cost the business

Fifty eight labor hours: forty four body at $210 per hour for floor correction, door work and refinishing, fourteen at $260 for the upfit rebuild and fabrication. Thirteen shop days, four of which were track and door hardware on freight. The doors were checked for reveal, latch effort and seal contact after the van had been driven over the yard rather than only on the level floor.

For a single van business, thirteen days is the real cost of this collision and it exceeded the repair invoice in lost revenue. That is worth saying because it is the number owners plan around and the one nobody writes down. ### How can I check whether my own van shelving is properly mounted?

Look at where the track fasteners land. If you can push the panel next to a fastener and feel it flex, that fastener is in unbacked sheet. Properly mounted track sits on the vertical ribs, or on backing plates spanning between them. A magnet will find the ribs from inside if the panel hides them.

### Why correct the floor before the door frame?

Because the floor is the reference the opening is built on. A lifted floor puts a twist into the aperture, so a door frame straightened against a distorted floor is straightened to the wrong shape. Correcting in that order also reduced the amount of frame work needed, which showed up as fewer hours on the invoice.
