# Winnebago Repair: SuperStructure Walls, Ford and Freightliner Rails

> Winnebago builds on **Ford F53, Freightliner XCS and Mercedes Sprinter** platforms with vacuum bonded sidewalls. That lay up decides whether a damaged panel gets injected and pressed or **opened and reskinned**.

## How is a damaged Winnebago repaired?

Winnebago repair starts by identifying the platform: a Vista on a Ford F53, a Forza on a Freightliner XCS, or a Revel on a Sprinter 4x4. Rancho Santa Margarita owners bring those coaches to our Yorba Linda floor, where laminated sidewall damage is measured before any panel is ordered.

- Vista, Sunstar and Adventurer sit on the Ford F53 gas chassis
- Forza and the older Journey use Freightliner XCS rails and air brakes
- Revel, Solis and Travato are Sprinter and ProMaster conversions
- Micro Minnie towables use laminated walls over a TPO roof

### Key facts

| Item | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Chassis families | Ford F53, Freightliner XCS, Sprinter 3500, Ram ProMaster |
| Wall system | Vacuum bonded laminate (Gelcoat fiberglass over block foam, aluminum cage and Azdel or lauan) |
| Body labor rate | $210 per hour (Body supplies $5 per body hour, paint supplies $55 per paint hour) |
| Written estimate | $150 (Credited in full against an authorized repair) |
| Parts channel | Forest City, Iowa (Dealer parts network, serial number required for cap segments) |

The badge on the front cap tells you less than the chassis tag inside the driver door. Winnebago has shipped product on four completely different platforms in the last decade, and a repair that is routine on one of them is a teardown on another. A Vista and a Revel share a nameplate and almost nothing structural.

So the first thing we settle on a Winnebago is what we are actually holding: the chassis, the wall lay up, the roof material, and the model year the cap mold changed. Those four answers set the method, the parts path and the number of days your bay is committed.

## The four platforms Winnebago builds on

Winnebago runs more chassis variety than any other builder of its size. Vista, Sunstar and Adventurer sit on the Ford F53 gas rail. Forza, Vita and the older Journey ride a Freightliner XCS with air brakes and air suspension. View and Navion are Sprinter 3500 cab chassis builds. Revel is a Sprinter 4x4, Solis and Travato are Ram ProMaster conversions, and Micro Minnie and Voyage are Lippert towable frames with nothing motorized underneath.

That variety changes the frame procedure. An F53 is a straight ladder frame, so it pulls conventionally with anchoring at the factory body mounts. A Sprinter or ProMaster is a unibody, which means correction is measurement work against manufacturer control points rather than a pull against a rail. Treating the second like the first is how a coach leaves a shop and never sits square again.

## Vacuum bonded walls and what a puncture actually costs

The Winnebago laminated sidewall is a sandwich: gelcoated fiberglass outside, block foam and an aluminum cage in the middle, Azdel or lauan on the inside face, all pressed as a single panel. Punch a hole in it and you have not simply made a hole, you have broken a bond line that keeps running past the visible damage. We sound the panel with a knuckle and a soft mallet and mark where the hollow note starts, which is routinely two feet beyond the crack.

A small puncture with the surrounding bond intact gets resin injected and pressed back with vacuum and platens. Once the bond has released across a broad area, injection stops being honest work and the skin has to come off. Those are two different repairs at two different price tiers, and which one you have is decided by sounding the wall rather than by looking at a photograph.

## Three roof answers across the Winnebago range

Motorized coaches in the current lineup mostly carry a one piece fiberglass roof that is walkable and takes a puncture the way a boat hull does. Towables such as Micro Minnie and Voyage run a TPO membrane over decking. Older Itasca badged coaches from the Sunova and Suncruiser era used EPDM, which is still repairable but will not accept a TPO patch chemically, so the patch material has to match the original.

Most roof work we see from Rancho Santa Margarita arrives after a low branch on a canyon road or a wind event that lifted a lap seal along the front cap joint. On a membrane roof that is a seam, sealant and sometimes a decking repair. On fiberglass it is laminate work followed by a gelcoat blend. The two jobs are priced on different sheets and take different bay time.

## Where Winnebago units take damage first

The patterns repeat across the range. The lower front valance on an F53 coach takes gravel and debris damage where the fiberglass is thinnest and a mounting flange sits right behind it. Slide rooms on Micro Minnie and Revel use Lippert Schwintek IN-WALL drives, and the rail wears in the last few inches of travel before anything else complains. Kwikee entry steps get folded by curb strikes in storage lots.

On the Sprinter based coaches the damage moves upward. A Revel carries a roof rack, an awning rail and a fan on a roof that is only about ten feet up, and parking structures around south Orange County are unforgiving about that. Those strikes usually involve the Mercedes roof panel and the Winnebago accessory mount at the same time, which means two parts channels on one estimate.

- Lower valance and front cap gravel damage on gas coaches
- Schwintek rail wear on single room towables and the Revel
- Kwikee step motor and mount damage from curbs
- Lap sealant lifting where the roof meets the front cap
- Awning rail pull at the sidewall on wind damaged units

## Sourcing Winnebago parts, and what runs late

Winnebago runs a real parts operation out of Forest City, Iowa, and a coach still in production is the best case this industry offers. Cap segments, valance skins, glass and interior trim are usually orderable against the serial number. Graphics are the weak point. Winnebago revises decal layouts inside a model year, and a kit for an older Vista may no longer print at all. When a kit is gone we mask and spray the layout instead of waiting for something that will not arrive.

Lead times are the part owners never get told. A molded cap ships freight and lands in weeks rather than days, longer if it comes painted. Skin stock and Azdel are quick. Discontinued Itasca panels are the long pole on any older coach, and we say so at authorization rather than on day nine. Special order parts require a full deposit at order, which is policy on this floor and not a negotiating position.

> **warning:** A backordered molded cap is the single most common reason a Winnebago job runs past its estimated days. We check availability before we write the scope, not after teardown.

## Rates, estimates and how the file opens

Body, paint, fiberglass and structural work bills at $210 per hour, with body supplies at $5 per body hour and paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. Slide drives, appliances and house electrical move to the mechanical and electrical department at $260 per hour. When a fault is intermittent and nobody can name it yet, diagnostic time is $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, and that hour is credited if the repair goes ahead.

A written repair estimate is $150, and that amount comes off the invoice once you authorize the work. Jobs over $2,000 take a 50 percent deposit at authorization. Sales tax applies to parts and materials, never to labor. All of it happens inside the Yorba Linda building, because a booth, a rack and a vacuum press cannot be carried to a storage lot.

## An independent shop, not a Winnebago dealer

OCRV Center holds no franchise, dealer or brand agreement with Winnebago Industries. We are an independent collision, structural and systems shop, and we state that plainly because owners are entitled to know who they are hiring. What we do bring is a parts channel, a frame rack sized for a 40 foot coach, and a downdraft booth that swallows a full length unit without sectioning the job.

Independence occasionally works in your favor. We are not obligated to one parts path, so when a molded panel sits on allocation we can price a repair to the existing panel and let you choose. Insurance work is billed to the carrier directly, and the file is photographed and measured at teardown so a supplement is defensible instead of arguable.

## Questions and answers

### Can you match Winnebago full body paint on a ten year old coach?

Yes, and it is measured rather than guessed. We read the panel with a spectrophotometer, then confirm against a spray out card held to the actual surface, because a decade of sun has moved the color away from the original code. Adjacent panels get blended so the repair does not read as a rectangle.

### Is a Revel roof strike a fiberglass job or a Mercedes body job?

Usually both. The roof panel itself is Mercedes sheet metal, while the rack, fan and solar mounts are Winnebago accessories bonded and bolted through it. We scope the metal repair and the accessory reinstallation separately, since they source from two different channels and only one of them is quick.

### How long does a Winnebago front cap replacement take?

Plan on the parts wait dominating the schedule. Removal, fitting, bonding, sealing and refinishing is a week or so of actual bay time on a gas coach. A molded cap arriving by freight, especially painted, is the variable that moves the delivery date, and we confirm availability before writing the scope.

### Are Micro Minnie sidewalls repairable once a bubble appears?

Often, if the bubble is caught while it is small. A bubble means the skin has released from the substrate underneath. Sounding the panel tells us how far the release travels. Small areas get injected and pressed. Once the hollow spreads across a bay of framing, the skin comes off and goes back on properly.

### Do you need my Winnebago serial number before ordering parts?

Yes, for anything molded or glass. Winnebago changed cap segments, window openings and valance shapes mid year more than once, so the model year alone is not enough to order against. Send us the serial plate photograph with your damage photographs and the parts search starts a day earlier.

### What happens if my Itasca badged coach needs a discontinued panel?

We repair the panel you have. Itasca ended as a badge in 2016 and most exterior moldings are gone from the supply chain. Laminate repair, splicing a section from donor stock and refinishing to blend is normally faster and cheaper than chasing a part nobody stocks anymore.
