# Prevost Shell Repair: Stainless Structure Under a Converter's Paint

## How is a Prevost conversion repaired?

Nothing else in this catalog is built like a Prevost. The shell is an integral stainless steel truss structure with bolt on exterior panels, produced in Sainte-Claire, Quebec by a Volvo Group company that also supports it through a real commercial service network.

Then a converter took that shell and built a residence inside it. Marathon, Liberty, Featherlite, Millennium and others each did that differently, with their own cabinetry, their own hydraulic slides and their own paint. Repairing one of these coaches means respecting both halves.

## Stainless truss structure and bolt on panels

The shell is a welded stainless steel truss, not a ladder frame with a body on top. That is why these coaches survive decades of commercial service. It also means structural repair is welding to stainless with correct filler and procedure, not pulling a rail and reskinning. Heat control matters, and so does avoiding contamination between stainless and carbon steel tooling.

Exterior panels are largely bolt on, which is a substantial advantage. A damaged lower panel or a bay door frequently unbolts and comes off rather than requiring cut and weld work. That keeps a moderate impact from turning into a structural job, provided the truss behind the panel is verified rather than assumed.

## Bumper caps, approach angles and the most common job

The single most frequent Prevost repair we write is front or rear lower fascia damage. These coaches are long, low at the extremities and unforgiving of driveway aprons, gas station transitions and steep lot entries. The molded cap takes the hit and the mounting structure behind it sometimes does too.

We inspect the mounting before ordering anything, because a cap fitted to bent mounts sits proud and looks wrong from ten feet away. Cap pieces come through the Prevost network, and paint is then matched to a converter's scheme rather than to a Prevost color, which is where the two halves of the job meet.

## The converter half: who built your interior

Marathon, Liberty, Featherlite, Millennium and Emerald all converted Prevost shells, and their work is where the coach's character and value live. Hydraulic slide rooms, electrical distribution, entertainment systems, cabinetry and the paint scheme are all converter items. Some of those companies are active and support their product. Others are not.

So our first question on a converted coach is which converter and which year. It determines whether a slide seal is a catalog part or a fabricated one, whether a cabinet door can be ordered or has to be built, and whether paint records exist. Featherlite's coach conversion business ended years ago, which puts those units in the orphaned category for interior parts.

## Paint over stainless and aluminum, applied by a converter

Conversion paint schemes are elaborate and were applied over stainless and aluminum rather than gelcoat. Preparation is therefore different from anything else in this building: etching, adhesion promotion and correct primer selection are not optional, and a shop that treats a Prevost panel like a fiberglass cap will produce adhesion failure inside two years.

Where the converter's paint records survive, we use them as a starting point and still confirm against the panel. Where they do not, the scheme is measured off the coach and rebuilt from spray out cards. Either way the work happens in a downdraft booth long enough to take a 45 foot coach without sectioning the job.

## Bay doors, seals and the things that get ignored

A Prevost has enormous luggage bays, and their doors are heavy assemblies on long hinges with substantial seals. Age, road flex and the occasional impact put those doors out of alignment, at which point the seal stops sealing and the bay collects road water. Owners often live with it for years.

Realignment is measurement work at the hinge and latch geometry, sometimes with hinge replacement, followed by seal renewal. It is unglamorous and it protects everything stored in the bay, including the electrical and mechanical equipment converters routinely mount there.

## Rates, capacity and our standing

Body, structural and refinish work bills at $210 per hour with paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. Mechanical, hydraulic and electrical work is $260. Diagnostics is $285 per hour with a one hour minimum credited against an authorized repair. Deposits are 50 percent over $2,000 and a further 25 percent at parts arrival over $10,000.

## Questions and answers

### Can a Prevost stainless structure be welded and repaired?

Yes, with the correct filler, procedure and heat control, and with tooling kept clean of carbon steel contamination. The truss is what makes these coaches last, so repairs restore the original section rather than plating over damage. Panels are largely bolt on, which keeps many impacts out of structural territory.

### Why do you need to know which company converted my coach?

Because the interior, the slides, the electrical distribution and the paint all came from the converter, not from Prevost. Marathon, Liberty, Millennium and others each source differently, and some conversion businesses no longer exist. The converter and the year decide whether an interior part is ordered or fabricated.

### What happens after a low front fascia strike on an H3-45?

Usually the door alignment rather than the seal itself. These are heavy assemblies on long hinges, and once the geometry shifts the seal cannot compress evenly. We measure hinge and latch geometry, correct or replace hinges, then renew seals. Replacing seal material alone repeats the failure.

### Can your building actually take a 45 foot converted coach?

Yes. The floor is 35,000 square feet with bays and a downdraft booth sized for full length coaches, so a 45 foot unit is refinished in one piece rather than in stages. Drivability and scheduling are the practical constraints, and both are settled at intake rather than mid job.
