# Midwest Automotive Designs Repair on Mercedes Sprinter Builds

> Midwest builds **executive Sprinter conversions** finished in automotive paint. Repairs are Mercedes body work plus **high value interior systems** that have to be documented before teardown.

## How is a Midwest Automotive Designs van repaired?

As a Mercedes Sprinter with a high value interior. Body and structural work follows Mercedes procedure and parts, while the conversion side covers seating mechanisms, lithium systems and cabinetry from Elkhart. Rancho Santa Margarita owners get both documented at our Yorba Linda shop.

- Built on Sprinter chassis including dual rear wheel and four wheel drive
- Automotive grade paint rather than gelcoat finishes
- Power seating and lithium systems are common in these builds
- Interior value needs documenting before any panel comes off

### Key facts

| Item | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Built in | Elkhart, Indiana (On Mercedes Sprinter chassis) |
| Finish | Automotive paint to Mercedes codes |
| Body rate | $210 per hour |
| Systems rate | $260 per hour (Power seating, lithium and inverter work) |
| Estimate | $150 (Credited in full against an authorized repair) |

A Midwest Automotive van is usually the most expensive vehicle on our lot that looks like a van. Executive shuttles, mobile offices and luxury travel builds on Sprinter chassis, finished to a standard that makes a careless repair obvious from across a parking lot.

Two things drive how we handle them. The body is Mercedes, so the procedures and parts are commercial vehicle standard. The interior is worth a great deal and is frequently invisible to an adjuster, which makes documentation the first task rather than an afterthought.

## Mercedes body work to Mercedes procedure

These are Sprinter vans, including dual rear wheel and four wheel drive versions, so collision repair follows the manufacturer's control points and published dimensions. Structural correction is measurement work rather than pulling against a rail, and the aluminum and high strength steel content in a modern van dictates what heat can be applied and where.

Parts come from the Mercedes commercial network, which stocks for fleets and therefore moves quickly. That predictability is welcome on a vehicle where the conversion side is anything but standard.

## Paint that has to match a luxury vehicle

These vans are painted rather than gelcoated, often in a deep single stage or a metallic that shows every flaw. Refinishing means Mercedes paint codes as a starting point, verified against the aged panel, with blends carried to a body line and clear laid to automotive standards.

We treat them as automotive refinish jobs, in the automotive part of the booth schedule, because a van that serves as an executive shuttle is judged by passengers who look closely. Recreational vehicle finish practice is not adequate here and we do not pretend otherwise.

## Documenting a high value interior

A Legend or Luxe interior contains power seating, upholstery, wood or composite cabinetry, entertainment equipment, a lithium bank and an inverter. None of that appears in a standard valuation of a Sprinter, and adjusters routinely open a file expecting to price a cargo van.

So we inventory and photograph the interior at intake, note capacities and equipment, and put it in the file before anything is removed. Where a claim is involved, that document is the difference between a settlement based on the vehicle you own and one based on the vehicle the database describes.

## Power seating and mechanical interior systems

Power sofas, sliding seat bases and lift assisted furniture are common in these builds, and they fail like any powered mechanism: an actuator stalls, a limit switch drifts, a mounting rail loosens. Diagnosis is electrical and mechanical rather than upholstery work.

We trace the circuit, test the actuator under load, and inspect the mounting into the floor structure. Loose mounting is the most common underlying cause, because a mechanism that racks slightly in its rail will bind and then draw enough current to trip protection.

## Rates, discretion and our standing

Body and refinish work bills at $210 per hour with paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. Electrical, seating and systems work is $260. Diagnostics is $285 per hour with a one hour minimum credited against an authorized repair. A written estimate is $150 on the same terms.

OCRV Center is an independent shop with no dealer agreement or affiliation with Midwest Automotive Designs or Mercedes-Benz. All work is performed in shop at Yorba Linda. Corporate and executive transport accounts can be billed on purchase order terms once established.

## Questions and answers

### Do you follow Mercedes procedures on a converted Sprinter?

Yes. The van is a Sprinter regardless of what is inside it, so structural correction uses the manufacturer's control points and published dimensions, and the mix of aluminum and high strength steel dictates heat limits. Parts come from the Mercedes commercial network, which stocks for fleets.

### Is refinishing an executive van different from an RV repaint?

Considerably. These vans are painted, often in metallics that show every flaw, and passengers see the finish up close. We work to automotive standards: code as a starting point, verified against the aged panel, blends to a body line, clear laid properly. Recreational vehicle finish practice is not adequate.

### Why do you inventory the interior before starting work?

Because a standard valuation treats a Sprinter as a cargo van, and your van contains power seating, cabinetry, entertainment equipment and a lithium bank. We photograph and list all of it at intake so a settlement is based on the vehicle you own rather than the database description.

### My power sofa stalls partway. Is the motor bad?

Usually not. The common cause is a mounting rail that has loosened, letting the mechanism rack and bind, which raises current draw until protection trips. We test the actuator under load and inspect the mounting into the floor structure before condemning any component.

### Can you work on a four wheel drive Sprinter conversion?

Yes. The four wheel drive Sprinter has its own ride height, driveline and undercarriage layout, and structural work follows the same Mercedes control point procedure. Lower body and rocker damage from driveway aprons is the most common thing we see on these, given the ride height.

### What happens to the electrical system when a wall panel comes out?

It gets mapped before the panel moves. An executive Sprinter conversion routes lighting, shade motors, audio and network cable inside the wall cavity, and Midwest runs harnesses to a central distribution point rather than daisy chaining them. We label every connector at the panel edge, photograph the routing, and reload the same path on reassembly so a shade or a screen does not come back dead.
