# Haulmark Repair: Why a Screwless Side Changes the Estimate

> Haulmark's higher trim trailers use a **screwless bonded exterior**, which looks better and repairs differently. A mid panel dent means **replacing a long single sheet**, not a section.

## Why is a screwless trailer more expensive to repair?

Because the side is one long bonded sheet rather than sections between posts. On a screwless Haulmark, damage in the middle of a side means replacing the whole panel. Our Yorba Linda shop explains that cost to Rancho Santa Margarita owners before the work starts, not after.

- Screwless sides are bonded with structural tape, not fastened
- There are no fastener lines to define a small repair area
- Screwed models still repair in sections between posts
- Race trailer interiors add cabinetry and wiring to the scope

### Key facts

| Item | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Built in | Bristol, Indiana |
| Exterior options | Screwed sections or screwless bonded sheet |
| Body rate | $210 per hour (Panel replacement, bonding and refinish) |
| Mechanical rate | $260 per hour (Axles, brakes, wiring and ramp hardware) |
| Estimate | $150 (Credited in full against an authorized repair) |

Haulmark builds enclosed trailers that range from a working cargo box to a finished race hauler, and the single most important thing to establish before quoting one is whether the exterior is screwed or screwless. That one detail can double the cost of identical damage.

Owners of screwless trailers bought them because a smooth side looks like a professional rig, and it does. What nobody explains at the sale is that a smooth side is one continuous bonded panel, so there is no fastener line to stop a repair at.

## What screwless construction means when something hits it

On a screwed trailer, aluminum sheet is fastened to vertical posts at intervals, and a damaged section comes off between two posts. On a screwless trailer, the exterior is a long single sheet bonded to the frame with structural tape and no visible fasteners. The smooth appearance is the whole point.

The consequence in a repair is that there is no natural break. A dent three feet from the front of a twenty foot side cannot be cut out and patched without leaving a visible joint on a panel whose selling feature is that it has none. So the panel gets replaced, and the panel is very large.

> **price:** Identical damage costs materially more on a screwless side than a screwed one, because the repair unit is the whole panel. We identify which construction you have before quoting so the number is not a shock.

## Bonding a panel properly

Structural bonding tape is not household tape. Surface preparation, temperature, cleanliness and roller pressure all determine whether the bond holds, and a panel bonded in a dusty yard on a cold morning fails at the leading edge on the first highway run.

We prepare and bond in the shop with controlled conditions, then dress the leading edge and the trim details so air cannot get under the panel. This is one of the clearest cases in this catalog where the work genuinely cannot be done outdoors, and where doing it outdoors is a repair you pay for twice.

## Race trailer interiors and what they add

A finished race hauler has cabinetry, wall coverings, wiring, lighting, sometimes a generator, an air compressor and a workbench mounted to structure. When a side panel is damaged, all of that has to come off the affected wall and go back on afterwards, and the mounting points have to land in sound structure.

That interior work is often half the job and it is regularly omitted from a quick estimate. We document the interior at intake, list the removal and reinstallation separately, and photograph the build for the file, because a carrier valuing a race hauler as an empty box is a familiar argument.

## Ramps, axles and the rest of the working parts

Ramp hinges, spring assist components, latches, axles, brakes and wiring on a Haulmark are conventional trailer hardware with good supply. Hinge tearout at the bottom rail is the common structural failure, usually after loading something heavy without supporting the ramp.

Those repairs are quick and predictable. We restore hinge attachment to sound structure, replace spring components as a set, and check that the rear opening is square before adjusting a latch. Running gear work bills at the mechanical rate.

## Rates, downtime and our standing

Panel, bonding, frame and refinish work bills at $210 per hour with paint supplies at $55 per paint hour where refinishing is involved. Axles, brakes, wiring and ramp hardware bill at $260. A written estimate is $150, credited in full against an authorized repair, and special order panels are paid in full at order.

OCRV Center is an independent shop with no dealer agreement or affiliation with Haulmark Trailers. All work is performed in shop at Yorba Linda. For racers and contractors we schedule around the calendar that matters, and purchase order billing is available on established accounts.

## Questions and answers

### Why does a small dent cost so much on my screwless trailer?

Because the side is one long bonded sheet with no fastener lines to stop a repair at. Cutting and patching leaves a visible joint on a panel whose entire selling point is that it has none, so the panel is replaced. We identify construction type before quoting for exactly this reason.

### Is structural bonding tape as strong as fasteners?

When applied correctly, yes, and it is what the factory used. Correctly means clean prepared surfaces, controlled temperature and proper roller pressure. Applied in a dusty yard on a cold morning it fails at the leading edge on the first highway run, which is why we bond indoors.

### Does my race trailer interior have to come out for a side repair?

The affected wall does. Cabinetry, wall covering, wiring and mounted equipment come off and go back on, with mounting points landing in sound structure. That is often half the job and it is the part quick estimates leave out. We list removal and reinstallation separately.

### What causes ramp hinge tearout on an enclosed hauler?

Loading something heavy without supporting the ramp. The hinge line takes the full load at the bottom rail and eventually pulls. Repair restores the attachment to sound structure and replaces spring components as a set, then we check that the rear opening is still square.

### Can you work around a race schedule?

Yes, and that is usually the point. Send photographs early so panels and hardware are ordered before the trailer arrives. Purchase order billing is available on established accounts. Screwless panels are special order and paid in full at order, which is the supplier's requirement.
