# Gulf Stream Repair: Stick Built Walls and Corrugated Siding

> Gulf Stream still builds **stick framed, aluminum sided trailers** alongside laminated ones. That means siding is **replaced in sections between studs** rather than filled or pressed back.

## How does Gulf Stream construction change the repair?

Gulf Stream builds both stick framed aluminum sided trailers and laminated units, and the two repair completely differently. For Rancho Santa Margarita owners of an Ameri-Lite or Kingsport, our Yorba Linda shop replaces siding in sections between studs instead of filling dents.

- Ameri-Lite uses wood framing with corrugated aluminum siding
- Higher lines use laminated fiberglass walls
- Corrugated siding is still available in matching profile
- Conquest and BT Cruiser are the motorized products

### Key facts

| Item | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Ownership | Family owned, Nappanee, Indiana (Still in production) |
| Wall systems | Stick framed with aluminum siding, and laminated fiberglass |
| Body rate | $210 per hour (Siding sections, framing repair and refinish) |
| Siding supply | Matching corrugated profile obtainable |
| Estimate | $150 written scope (Credited in full against an authorized repair) |

Gulf Stream is unusual twice over. It is one of the few genuinely independent family owned builders left, and it still makes trailers the old way: wood framing with corrugated aluminum siding, at a price that puts people camping who could not otherwise afford it.

Those two facts change how we repair them. Stick built and aluminum sided is a different job from vacuum bonded fiberglass, and because the company is still in Nappanee making the same product, siding in the correct profile is something we can actually buy.

## What stick built means when something hits it

An Ameri-Lite wall is wood framing with insulation between the studs and corrugated aluminum fastened over the outside. Damage transmits into the framing at the point of impact and stops. There is no bond line to release, which means the repair footprint is defined by the studs on either side rather than by how far a hollow sound travels.

So we open the siding, straighten or replace the affected framing members, address any water damaged wood, then fit new siding between the natural break points. It is carpentry and sheet metal work rather than composite work, and on a value trailer it is far cheaper than the equivalent laminated repair.

## Corrugated siding, and why the profile matters

Corrugated aluminum siding comes in specific profiles, and the ribs have to line up across a repair or the whole side reads wrong from the street. Because Gulf Stream still builds these trailers, matching profile stock is obtainable rather than a scavenger hunt, which is not true of most brands that used the same construction thirty years ago.

What is not obtainable on an older unit is factory painted skin in the original color. Aluminum siding fades and the pigment shifts, so a new section next to a twenty year old panel is visible even in matching profile. On those we spray the replacement to match the aged panel, or paint the full side if the damage is extensive.

## Water in a wood framed wall

The weakness of stick built construction is what happens when water gets past the siding. Wood framing rots, and it does so quietly behind an aluminum skin that looks fine. The entry point is almost always window or corner molding sealant that hardened and cracked, and the symptom is a soft floor at the wall, a window that no longer sits square, or a musty smell.

We open the wall wherever moisture readings say to, replace rotted framing with sound material, and reinstate the water management details rather than just sealing the outside. A trailer caught early is an inexpensive repair. One that has been wet for five seasons may not be worth what the repair costs, and we will say so.

## Vintage Cruiser and repairing retro styling

The Vintage Cruiser is a modern trailer wearing 1950s styling, with two tone paint, rounded corners and period looking trim. That trim is what makes the unit, and it is also what gets damaged in a low speed backing incident because it sits proud of the body.

We repair those with an eye on the styling rather than just the panel. Corner trim, belt line molding and the two tone break all have to come back correctly or the trailer loses the thing the owner bought it for. Where a piece of trim is unobtainable we fabricate it, which is cheaper than it sounds on simple extruded shapes.

## Conquest, BT Cruiser and the motorized side

Gulf Stream's coaches are conventional cutaway and van based builds: Conquest Class C units on Ford or Chevrolet cutaways, BT Cruiser as a Class B plus, and the older Independence and Sun Voyager gas Class A coaches on Ford rails. Those repair like any cutaway coach, with cabover cracks and cab joint sealant at the top of the list.

The advantage of a company still in business is that we can ask. On a discontinued coach line, a Nappanee parts desk that still exists is worth more than any amount of aftermarket searching, and it is the reason Gulf Stream owners generally have an easier time than owners of brands that closed.

## Repair economics on a value trailer

These are affordable trailers, which cuts both ways. Repairs are usually cheap because the construction is simple and siding is available. But the market value is modest, so a large water damage job or a heavy collision can exceed what the unit is worth, and a carrier will reach that conclusion quickly.

We give a straight answer before teardown, with moisture readings and photographs. Owners of these trailers are frequently families on a budget, and telling somebody honestly that a repair does not make financial sense is more useful than a large invoice on a trailer that was already finished.

## Rates and our standing

Siding, framing, cap and refinish work bills at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour. Slide, appliance and electrical work is $260. A written estimate is $150 and is credited in full when the repair is authorized. Jobs over $2,000 take a 50 percent deposit at authorization.

OCRV Center is an independent shop with no dealer relationship or affiliation with Gulf Stream Coach. All work is performed in shop at Yorba Linda. For owners in Rancho Santa Margarita, a value trailer is an easy tow up the 241, and these units fit any bay in the building.

## Questions and answers

### Is a stick built trailer worse than a laminated one to repair?

Not worse, different, and often cheaper. Damage stays local because there is no bond line to release, so the repair area is defined by the studs beside the impact. The tradeoff is water: wood framing rots when sealant fails, while a composite substrate does not.

### Can you match the corrugated siding profile on my Ameri-Lite?

Yes. Because Gulf Stream still builds these trailers, matching profile stock is obtainable rather than a hunt through salvage. What we cannot buy is aged factory color, so the new section is sprayed to match the panel next to it or the full side is refinished.

### How do you find rot behind aluminum siding?

Moisture readings, pressure on the wall by hand, and inspecting from inside at the floor line and window returns. Aluminum hides everything, so guessing is useless. We map wet areas with a meter before opening anything, then open only where the readings and the symptoms agree.

### Can Vintage Cruiser trim be replaced if it is discontinued?

Usually fabricated rather than bought. Simple extruded shapes are straightforward to reproduce, and the styling matters more than the part number on these trailers. We match the profile and the finish so the two tone break and the corner details come back the way the trailer left the factory.

### Does it help that Gulf Stream is still in business?

Considerably. A parts desk that still exists in Nappanee can answer questions about a fifteen year old trailer, and matching siding is still produced. Owners of brands that closed have neither. It is one of the underrated advantages of buying from a builder that has stayed independent.

### Will you tell me if my trailer is not worth repairing?

Yes, in writing, with moisture readings and photographs, before any teardown. These are affordable trailers with modest market value, so a large water job can exceed what the unit is worth. An honest answer early is more useful than a large invoice on a trailer that was already finished.
