Transit buses are the most expensive vehicles a small agency owns and the ones with the least tolerance for downtime, because a bus out of service is a headway problem rather than an inconvenience. ENC low floor shells are built for that duty cycle, and they are built to be repaired.

The reason is the construction. A tube structure carries the loads and the exterior panels bolt to it. When something clips a bus in traffic, the panel absorbs it and comes off with fasteners rather than a cutting wheel.

## Why bolt on panels change the estimate

On a monolithic body, moderate damage means pulling metal, filling and refinishing over a large area. On a bolt on panel system, the damaged panel comes off and a new one goes on. Paint is still required, but the metalwork and the guesswork largely disappear, and the repair is far more repeatable.

What does not disappear is the need to verify the structure. A panel absorbs energy and passes some of it into the tube behind. We inspect and measure that tube before fitting a new panel, because a straight panel bolted over a deformed structure will not fit and will not last.

## Not the same vehicle as an ElDorado shuttle

## Door systems on a high cycle vehicle

A transit bus door opens at every stop, which on a busy route is hundreds of cycles per shift. The systems are pneumatic or electric with sensitive edge sensors and interlocks, and they drift out of adjustment long before they fail outright. A door that closes hard or reopens without reason is telling you something.

We diagnose the mechanism, the sensor and the interlock as a system, adjust geometry and replace worn components. This is the repair most likely to keep a bus in service, and it is far cheaper than the panel damage that follows a door hitting something.

## Roof modules on CNG and electric buses

CNG tank modules and battery configurations put substantial equipment on the roof, inside fairings that have to stay sealed and secure. Any body work near a roof module means understanding what is above the ceiling before a fastener comes out, and on electric buses it means isolating high voltage before anything else happens.

Often, yes, which is one of the advantages of this construction. The panel comes off with fasteners and a new one goes on, then it is refinished. What still has to happen is verifying the tube structure behind it, because a straight panel over a deformed tube will neither fit nor last.
