# Dutchmen Repair and the Coleman Badge Nobody Explains

> Coleman badged trailers are **built by Dutchmen under license**, which is why a Coleman parts search fails. Ask for **Dutchmen part numbers** and the same panel appears immediately.

## Who builds Coleman trailers and how does that affect repairs?

Dutchmen builds them under license, so Coleman badged units are Dutchmen products with Dutchmen part numbers. Rancho Santa Margarita owners who cannot find parts under the Coleman name get them found under Dutchmen at our Yorba Linda shop, usually the same day.

- Coleman trailers and fifth wheels are Dutchmen built
- Aspen Trail and Kodiak are the volume towable lines
- Voltage is the toy hauler fifth wheel range
- Component parts move quickly through Thor group purchasing

### Key facts

| Item | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Built in | Goshen, Indiana (Thor Industries division) |
| Licensed badge | Coleman (Parts are catalogued under Dutchmen numbers) |
| Body rate | $210 per hour |
| Slide hardware | Lippert Schwintek on lighter units |
| Estimate | $150 written scope (Credited in full against an authorized repair) |

The most useful sentence on this page is the first one an owner usually hears from us on the phone: if your trailer says Coleman on the side, Dutchmen built it. That single fact unlocks a parts catalog that otherwise appears not to exist, and it is why some owners are told a panel is unavailable when it is sitting in a warehouse under a different number.

Beyond the badge, Dutchmen builds conventional towables at family prices out of Goshen. Aspen Trail, Kodiak, Voltage and Astoria are straightforward units with predictable failure points, and that predictability keeps repair costs sensible.

## The Coleman license and the parts search that fails

Coleman is a licensed name on these trailers, not a manufacturer. The brand is famous for coolers, lanterns and tents, so an owner searching for a Coleman sidewall skin gets camping equipment. Even some parts counters get confused, and owners get told the part does not exist.

It does exist, catalogued under Dutchmen. We take the serial plate off the trailer, search under Dutchmen, and the panel, the cap, the compartment door or the window comes back with a number and a price. It sounds trivial and it regularly saves an owner two weeks of dead ends.

> **note:** If a parts counter tells you a Coleman trailer part is unavailable, ask them to search under Dutchmen with your serial number. The same panel usually appears under a different number.

## Wall construction across the Dutchmen range

Aspen Trail and Kodiak span both common approaches depending on line and year: some use vacuum bonded laminated walls with a smooth fiberglass exterior, others use aluminum framing with a fastened corrugated skin. The exterior finish tells you most of it, since a smooth glossy side is laminated and a ribbed side is framed and skinned.

That difference sets the repair method and the cost. A laminated wall needs the bond release mapped by sounding before anybody quotes hours. A framed and skinned wall repairs between framing members with a siding section. We identify which you have at intake instead of assuming from the model name.

## Voltage haulers and their garage floors

Voltage is the toy hauler line, and it takes the abuse haulers always take. Tie down anchors punch load into the garage floor, the floor deflects locally over years, and the ramp door stops meeting its opening squarely. The first complaint is usually a draft or water at one ramp corner rather than a floor problem.

We repair the floor as structure, reinforce the anchor points into sound material, then reset ramp geometry so the seal compresses evenly across the width. Ramp cables and springs are mechanical work at $260 per hour, and we replace cable sets rather than single cables.

## Schwintek rooms on light trailers

The lighter Dutchmen and Coleman units use Lippert Schwintek in wall drives, which fail at the rail rather than the motor. Owners hear a grind near the end of travel, then the room needs help starting, then eventually it stalls partway and will not go either direction.

By that point the rail and the gear packs are both worn, because they are a matched wear pair. We pull the room, measure the rail along the loaded section, and replace rails and gear packs together. Replacing only a motor is the repair we most often correct on trailers that came from elsewhere.

## Keeping repair costs sensible on a family trailer

Most Dutchmen and Coleman owners are families who bought at a price point, and a repair estimate has to respect that. Where a repair to the existing panel will hold, we quote it rather than a replacement panel plus freight. Where a simplified graphic scheme costs less than reproducing a discontinued decal package, we offer both.

What we will not do is patch something that will fail again inside a season and call it a repair. If a wall is wet, sealing the outside is not a repair. We will explain the difference and let you decide, including the option of doing nothing for now if the trailer is still serviceable.

## Window sealant, the cheapest maintenance there is

The single most common cause of expensive Dutchmen repairs is window and molding sealant that hardened and cracked. Inland Southern California heat shortens the life of sealant, and a bead that looks acceptable from the ground has usually opened at the upper corners where you cannot see it.

Inspecting and renewing sealant is an hour of work that prevents a wall repair. We do it as maintenance on request and we do it as part of any job that opens the area. Owners who make it a habit every couple of years almost never see us for water damage.

## Rates and who we are

Body, cap and refinish work bills at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour. Slide, appliance and electrical work is $260. A written estimate is $150 and is credited in full when the repair is authorized. Parts at or under $100 carry 100 percent markup and parts over $100 carry 35 percent.

OCRV Center is an independent shop. We have no dealer agreement or affiliation with Dutchmen, Thor Industries or the Coleman brand. All work is performed in shop at Yorba Linda, an easy tow from Rancho Santa Margarita on the 241 to the 91.

## Questions and answers

### Why can nobody find parts for my Coleman trailer?

Because Coleman is a licensed badge and Dutchmen built the trailer. A search under Coleman returns camping equipment. The same panel or cap exists under Dutchmen part numbers, and we look it up with your serial plate. That one substitution regularly saves owners two weeks.

### How can I tell if my Dutchmen has a laminated or a framed wall?

Look at the exterior. A smooth glossy side is a vacuum bonded laminated wall, where damage releases the bond beyond what you can see. A ribbed corrugated side is aluminum framed with fastened skin, where damage stays between framing members. The two cost very different amounts to repair.

### There is a draft at one corner of my Voltage ramp. Why?

The garage floor has deflected, so the ramp no longer meets its opening squarely. Tie down anchors concentrate load into the floor and loosen over years. We repair the floor as structure, reinforce the anchors, then reset ramp geometry before replacing any seal material.

### Will you quote a repair instead of a replacement panel?

Whenever a repair will genuinely hold, yes, and we say which is which. On family priced trailers a repaired panel plus refinish frequently beats a new panel plus freight. What we will not do is seal over a wet wall and call it fixed, because that fails within a season.

### How often should trailer window sealant be renewed?

Inspect every year and expect to renew every few years in inland Southern California heat. Sealant that looks acceptable from the ground has usually opened at the upper corners. An hour of sealant work prevents the wall repair that costs a hundred times as much.

### My slide stalls halfway and will not move either direction. What now?

Stop operating it. Forcing a Schwintek room past a bind removes more rail material every cycle and turns a gear pack job into a rail job. We pull the room, measure the rail along the loaded section, and replace rails and gear packs as matched pairs.
