# Collins Bus Repair Where Sidewalls Are Structure, Not Skin

School bus bodies are the most regulated structures we work on, and Type A buses are the smallest of them: a Collins body on a Ford or Chevrolet cutaway, carrying students on district routes and activity trips. What separates them from a shuttle is that federal requirements govern how the body holds together.

That changes a repair from a cosmetic decision into a structural one. A rub rail is not trim. A sidewall panel is not skin. Both are part of a system designed to keep its shape, and both have to go back capable of doing that.

## Body joint strength and what it forbids

Federal standards address body joint strength and sidewall integrity on school buses, which means the fastening pattern, the panel overlap and the rub rail attachment are all part of the engineered structure rather than assembly convenience. A repair that pulls a dent and fills it does not restore any of that.

So we replace damaged panels and rub rails rather than straightening them where the material has been stretched or the fasteners have torn, and we restore the original fastening pattern. A district cannot put a bus back on a route with structure that has been guessed at, and we do not ask them to.

## Rub rails take the hits at loading zones

The rub rails run the length of the body at seat and floor level, and they exist to absorb exactly the contact these buses get: a post at a loading zone, a gate, another vehicle in a lot. A bent rub rail has usually done its job, and the panel behind it may be fine.

We assess whether the rail alone took the damage or whether load transferred into the sidewall structure, then replace the rail section and any compromised panel. Straightening a stretched rail and reusing it is not a restoration of the original strength, so we do not offer it.

## Stop arms, doors and warning systems

A Type A bus carries a stop arm, crossing gate on some configurations, warning lamps, an entry door mechanism and emergency exits with monitored latches. Any body repair near those systems can disturb wiring or geometry, and every one of them is inspected before the bus goes back into service.

We function test each system after repair and record the results in the file. For a school district that documentation is part of the return to service process, and providing it with the invoice saves the transportation supervisor a separate inspection.

## Floor corrosion and wheelchair positions

Type A floors corrode at the stepwell and at wheelchair securement positions, where water and cleaning chemicals collect and where anchor hardware penetrates the floor. On a bus in its second decade this is often the most consequential thing we find, and it is invisible until the flooring comes up.

Repair is cut out, weld in and reinstate, with securement anchors remounted into sound structure. Wheelchair securement is a load path in an emergency, so anchor mounting is treated as structure rather than as hardware.

## Rates, procurement and our standing

Body, structural and refinish work bills at $210 per hour. Mechanisms, warning systems and electrical work bill at $260. A written estimate is $150 and is credited in full when the repair is authorized. District work is typically authorized against a purchase order referencing the written scope.

## Questions and answers

### Can a dent in a school bus sidewall just be filled?

No. Sidewall panels and their joints are part of an engineered structure governed by federal body joint requirements, so filling a stretched panel does not restore anything. We replace damaged panels and restore the original fastening pattern, which is what allows a district to return the bus to a route.

### Why not straighten a bent rub rail instead of replacing it?

Because the material has been stretched and the fastening may have torn, so straightening returns the shape without the strength. The rail exists to absorb exactly the contact it just absorbed. We replace the section and check whether load transferred into the sidewall behind it.
