# The Fifth Wheel With Its Pin Box Pushed Back Two Inches

## What happens when a fifth wheel pin box is driven rearward in an impact?

Load transfers into the upper deck rails and their risers, mounting holes elongate, and the geometry that sets pin height and tracking changes. Units arrive at our Yorba Linda shop from Rancho Santa Margarita towing an inch off centre, with a cracked cap that reads as cosmetic.

The owner brought it in for a cracked front cap and a complaint that the trailer had started pulling to the right. Those two symptoms belong together and he had no reason to know that. A fuel lane incident four months earlier had brought the truck and trailer to a hard stop with the trailer swinging, and the pin box had absorbed the whole event.

By the time we measured it, the king pin sat about two inches further aft than the drawing and three eighths of an inch lower. Neither number is visible. Both change how the trailer tows, and one of them explained the crack in the cap that had brought him in.

## What the pin box is actually attached to

The pin box bolts to a mounting plate on the upper deck of the trailer frame, usually through a grid of holes with heavy hardware. Above and around that plate the upper deck rails run fore and aft, and those rails are supported by risers, which are the vertical or angled members tying the upper deck down to the main frame behind and below it.

That assembly carries every pound of hitch weight plus every dynamic load the road generates, and it does it in tension, compression and bending depending on what the trailer is doing. It is designed for that. What it is not designed for is a longitudinal shove, which is exactly what a hard stop with a swinging trailer delivers.

## What the teardown found

The pin box itself was straight, which is common because it is the heaviest single part in the assembly. Its mounting plate was not. Four of the twelve bolt holes had elongated into ovals roughly a sixteenth of an inch longer than round, in the direction of the impact. Elongated holes mean the bolts had moved through them under load, which means the joint was no longer a clamped joint and the plate had been working against the hardware since the day of the incident.

Behind that, two risers had buckled where they weld to the underside of the upper rail. Not broken, buckled: a shallow dimple in the web with a slight bow along the length. That is compression failure and it is permanent. And forward of everything, the front cap radius had cracked, which is a load path symptom rather than an impact injury, because nothing had touched the cap.

## The measurements that defined the repair

Five numbers. King pin height from a level floor with the trailer supported at its designed attitude. King pin position fore and aft relative to the axle centreline. Upper deck squareness measured as diagonals. Main frame diagonals at three stations. And side to side level across the upper deck.

Those five told us the main frame was straight and the damage was entirely in the upper deck and its attachment. That is the best possible answer on a unit like this, because a bent main frame on a fifth wheel is a much larger conversation. The measurement work bills at the diagnostic rate with a one hour minimum and is credited in full against an authorized repair, and it is what made the scope defensible to the carrier without any argument.

## Why a cap cracked when nothing hit it

The front cap is fastened to the framed opening at the front of the trailer, and that framing is tied into the upper deck. Move the upper deck geometry and the framing that the cap is bolted to twists slightly. The cap, being a rigid moulded shell, cannot twist with it, so it concentrates the difference at its stiffest point, which is the corner radius.

This is why we ask about towing history on any front cap crack that has no impact story attached. A cap that cracks with no visible cause has a cause, and on a fifth wheel the cause is upstream in the hitch assembly more often than not. Repairing the crack without correcting the geometry produces a repair that reopens, which is a story told at more length elsewhere on this site.

> **warning:** Elongated bolt holes are not repairable by using a larger bolt. The plate has to be replaced or the holes filled and remachined, because an oversized hole in a load bearing plate has already lost the material that made it work.

## How it went back together

Pin box off, mounting plate replaced with new material, both buckled risers cut out and replaced with sections matching the original profile, and the upper deck rails brought back to square on the rack with the trailer anchored at defined points. Welds ground, inspected and coated, because bare steel inside a frame in a coastal county has a predictable future.

Then geometry. King pin height set to the manufacturer's figure and verified against the tow vehicle's bed rail clearance with the actual truck present, which is a step people skip and which matters because a pin height that is nominally correct can still be wrong for a specific truck and hitch combination. Front cap flange rebedded, crack ground out and relaminated, refinished with a blend into the adjacent panel.

## The before and after, in numbers

Before: king pin two inches aft of drawing, three eighths low, upper deck diagonals differing by five sixteenths of an inch, uneven tire wear on the curb side and a trailer that tracked right. After: king pin within an eighth of drawing in both axes, upper deck diagonals within a sixteenth, and a trailer that tows straight with even loading across the axles.

Twenty two days in the bay, of which eleven were supplement review and parts on the framing sections. The owner's own summary was the useful one. He said he would have kept towing it for years on the assumption that a pull to one side was a tire pressure problem, and the cracked cap was the only reason he ever brought it in.

## Questions and answers

### Can elongated pin box mounting holes be fixed with bigger bolts?

No. An oval hole in a load bearing plate has already lost the material that made the joint work, and a larger bolt in a larger hole reduces the remaining section further. The plate is replaced, or the holes are filled and remachined to size. Either way the original plate does not go back as it is.

### What does a buckled upper deck riser look like?

A shallow dimple in the web with a slight bow along its length, usually at or near the weld to the upper rail. It is compression failure rather than a break, so nothing is separated and nothing rattles. It is also permanent, and a buckled member has lost most of its designed capacity.

### Why would a fifth wheel start pulling to one side after an incident?

### Can hitch damage crack a front cap with no contact?
