# A Fractured Class C Front Cap, Repaired and Blended

> Judge a cap repair by the **windshield reveal**, which must hold one width top to bottom. The mid repair plate shows a **stepped taper**, which is the only visual proof a crack was ground out.

## What should you look for in front cap crack repair photographs?

Look at the windshield reveal for consistent width and look for a stepped taper in any mid repair frame. On this Class C at our Yorba Linda shop, thirty one body hours restored the reveal and the blend terminated at the roof line moulding rather than in open surface.

- A narrowing reveal means the laminate was displaced, not just cracked
- Stepped glass layers prove a taper was ground rather than filled
- Raking light confirms fairing is level before primer
- The blend must end on a moulding or a body line

### Key facts

| Item | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Unit | Class C motorhome (Nine model years old, molded fiberglass front cap over a cutaway cab) |
| Labor | 31 body hours (Body and paint department at $210 per hour) |
| Shop days | 8 |
| Blend terminated at | The roof line moulding (The nearest legitimate break line on this cap) |
| Plates published | 2 pairs (Including a mid repair taper detail) |

A cracked cap is the most photographed damage in this trade and the least informative. Anybody can make a crack disappear with filler and paint, and it will look perfect in a photograph taken the day the unit leaves. So the plates on this page are framed around the two things that actually indicate a sound repair, and one of them is a mid repair frame.

The unit is a Class C, nine years old, with a branching fracture below the right windshield corner and a small area where the laminate had been pushed inward.

## The reveal tells you what the crack does not

A windshield or window reveal is the gap between the glass and the surrounding structure. It is set at the factory and it is one of the most sensitive indicators of shape on the whole unit, because a displacement of an eighth of an inch shows plainly as a taper in the gap. In the before frame here, the reveal narrows as it descends toward the fracture, which says the laminate around it moved inward when it was struck.

That matters more than the crack. A crack in stable material is a laminate repair. A crack with displacement means the shape has to be brought back before anything is laid up, or the repair locks in a geometry that stresses the glass seal for the rest of the unit's life. Owners who learn to read the reveal can assess this themselves in a photograph, which is why the pair is framed to show it.

## The taper plate, and why it is published

Fiberglass is repaired by removing material, not by adding it. The crack is ground out on a shallow taper extending well past the damage in every direction, which exposes the glass laminate in concentric steps like a contour map. New mat and resin are then laid into that taper in a schedule that rebuilds the original thickness, so the repair is bonded across a wide area of sound glass rather than butted against a crack edge.

Plate 2.1 shows those steps. It is the only frame in this whole set that proves the method, because once the fairing is done and primer is on, a properly tapered repair and a filled crack are visually identical. A shop that has never published a taper photograph has not necessarily done anything wrong, but it also has not shown you the part that matters.

## Raking light, and how fairing is checked

Plate 2.2 was shot deliberately with the light almost parallel to the surface. That is how fairing is judged in a body bay, and it is far more revealing than overhead light: every high spot casts a shadow and every low spot catches a bright edge. A surface that reads flat under raking light is genuinely flat, and one that shows a scalloped pattern has filler shrinkage or a block sanding error.

This technique is worth knowing as an owner. On collection day, ask to walk the repaired panel with the light behind you at a shallow angle, or simply stand at one end of the unit and look down the panel toward the sun. Any wave in the surface will show. It takes ten seconds and it is the single most useful acceptance check available to somebody without instruments.

- Stand at one end and sight down the panel with light behind you
- Look for a reflected straight edge staying straight across the repair
- Check the reveal gap top to bottom on any glass near the work
- Run a hand across the boundary; you should not feel where it ends

## Where the blend ended, and why there

The refinish travelled up and across to the roof line moulding on the affected side. That is not because the damage was that large; it is because a molded cap offers no break line closer to the repair. New clear coat terminating in open surface produces a rectangle that catches light differently once the finish begins to age, and the only way to avoid it is to carry the blend to a physical edge.

On this cap that meant additional prep and paint area for a repair that was mechanically small, which is precisely the geometry cost described on the blend comparison page. Owners comparing quotes on cap work should ask where the blend will end. A quote that stops at the repair area is cheaper and will show a boundary in three summers.

## Questions and answers

### Is any filler acceptable in a fiberglass cap repair?

Yes, in a thin skim to fair the surface after the laminate work is complete. What is not acceptable is filler doing structural duty, meaning a crack bridged with filler and no glass behind it. The difference is invisible once painted, which is why the taper photograph exists and why it is worth asking for.

### How much reveal variation is acceptable after a cap repair?

The gap should look constant to the eye along its full length, which in practice means within about a sixteenth of an inch on a cap of this size. More than that and the glass seal is loaded unevenly, which eventually shows as a leak at the tight corner rather than as an appearance complaint.

### Will a repaired fiberglass crack come back through the paint?

Not if the crack was ground out and the laminate rebuilt across sound glass. Cracks reappear when they were filled rather than removed, because the original fracture is still there and it continues to move with temperature and flex. A returning crack is a diagnosis of the previous repair, not of the material.

### Was this cap finished in gelcoat or in paint?

In paint, blended into the existing painted surface. Gelcoat repair is possible and is sometimes the right call on an all gelcoat hull, but matching aged gelcoat colour is harder than matching aged paint and the result is less forgiving. On a painted cap there is no reason to introduce a second finish system.
