# Before and After Plates from Finished Repair Projects

## How are the OCRV Center before and after plates documented?

Each pair is photographed from the same position under comparable light, numbered, and captioned with the detail a trained eye checks. Projects were performed in shop at Yorba Linda, several for owners in Rancho Santa Margarita, and every plate names what to look at rather than asking for admiration.

Repair photography is easy to abuse. Shoot the before in shade from four feet away, shoot the after in afternoon sun from twelve feet at a flattering angle, and mediocre work looks transformative. Everybody in this trade knows the trick, which is why photographs alone are weak evidence and why owners are right to be sceptical of a gallery.

These eight pages are built to be checkable instead. Each pair is taken from the same position in comparable light, numbered, and captioned with the specific thing a trained eye examines: a reveal, a seam line, a surface reflection, a panel gap. Where a photograph genuinely cannot answer a question, the page says so and points at the file that can.

## How to read a plate pair

Ignore the damage. On a before frame the damage is the loudest thing and the least informative, because everybody can see it. What tells you about the quality of a repair is the geometry around it: whether a panel gap is even along its full length, whether a windshield or window reveal is the same width top to bottom, whether a seam line runs straight past the repaired area, and whether a reflection travels across the surface without a break.

Reflections are the most useful single thing in a photograph of finished bodywork. A repaired panel that is flat and correctly blocked reflects a straight line as a straight line. A panel with filler shrinkage or an uncorrected low spot bends that reflection, and you can see the bend at a glance even in a phone photograph. That is why several plates in these sets are shot specifically to catch a reflected edge.

## What a photograph cannot show you

Everything inside the assembly. A pressed sidewall photographs identically whether the bond was properly reset or the ripple was simply filled and faired, and the difference appears eighteen months later. A new roof membrane looks the same over sound decking and over a bay somebody decided to leave. A straightened door opening looks correct whether or not the diagonals were measured.

That is why these pages carry hours, days and a link to the corresponding job file where one exists. Photographs are the last five percent of a repair record. The measurement, the moisture reading, the layup schedule and the parts list are the other ninety five, and any shop that offers only a gallery is showing you the part that is easiest to fake.

## The standards these plates are held to

Same position, comparable light, no filters and no colour grading. Where an after frame had to be taken at a different time of day, the caption says so. Where a plate is a detail shot rather than a matched pair, it is labelled as a detail and not presented as a comparison. Nothing here has been retouched, including the bits of shop floor and lighting rig visible at the edges.

We also publish frames that show the unglamorous middle. A stripped roof with the decking open, a wall with the skin off, a floor with the framing exposed: those images are more informative than either the before or the after, and they are the ones a shop with something to hide would leave out.

## Questions and answers

### Why does shooting from the same position matter so much?

Because angle and distance change apparent geometry. A panel photographed from further back looks flatter, and a low angle hides a wave that is obvious from eye level. Holding position constant means the only difference between the two frames is the work, which is the entire point of a pair.

### Why publish mid repair photographs at all?

Because they show what was actually addressed. An open roof frame proves which decking bays were replaced. A wall with the skin off proves the cage condition. Those frames are the ones an owner would want if they were standing in the bay, and withholding them turns a record into marketing.

### Will my repair be photographed this way?

Your job is photographed at intake, at teardown and at completion as standard, because the file needs it and because a carrier may need it. Whether any of it is published depends entirely on whether you are asked and agree. Either way the frames belong in your file and you can have copies.

### How much should a repair gallery influence choosing a shop?

Less than owners assume. A gallery tells you a shop can finish work to a presentable standard, which is a low bar. What separates shops is measurement discipline, documentation and what happens when teardown finds something unexpected. Ask to see a written scope and a measurement record rather than more photographs.
